about
Back in 2016, I was writing a lot of songs on an unplugged bass guitar. This is because my friend living in the room next door was on the other side of a very thin wall and I didn't want to upset him, so I opted for writing on an instrument that wouldn't make a lot of noise. 'Always & Never' was a product of that songwriting period, born out of a bass guitar line played on a cruddy old bass guitar bought second hand in a haberdashery in St Andrews, Scotland during a summer of heartbreak.
'Always & Never' is about a time in my twenties when I was dating, but I really shouldn't have been. I was going on dates with some really amazing women, but deep inside I knew I couldn't give them anything real, because the idea of being in a relationship and falling in love scared the hell out of me ('I'm not scared of being alone, I'm just scared of being the one for you'). You see, I'd had my heart broken really badly only a few years earlier and it was an experience that brought me to the end of myself. I was afraid that if that happened again, there might not be anything left of me... If you know what I mean.
Anyway, I wrapped those experiences up in this song, a back and forth between a male and female character seemingly going through a break up. However this is only a surface level device, what's really going on here is that these two characters represent the two sides of me in conflict and in conversation with each other ('Always there for days contemplating you') . The cold and broken masculine ego ('never') and the soft, passionate emotional side ('always'), both vying for control of a body with a broken heart. How does the story resolve? Only time will tell...
lyrics
Our place, where we can talk face to face
Baby a lot's changed
in the space of just a few days,
she said to me
I'm not scared of being alone
I'm just scared of being the one for you
Ooo x4
I'm not scared of being on my own
I'm just scared of saying how much I want you
Always and never, adieu
Ablaze, all I held dear up in flames
Baby stay please (stay please)
I'll be good if you just freeze,
he said to me
I'm not scared of being alone
I'm just scared of being the one for you
Ooo x4
I'm not scared of being on my own
I'm just scared of saying how much I want you
Always and never, adieu
Always there for days contemplating you
Tumbling through pages of heartbreak anew
Throughout the stages my love never grew
Always and never might just have to do
I'm not scared of being alone
I'm just scared of being the one for you
Ooo x4
I'm not scared of being on my own
I'm just scared of saying how much I love you
Always and never

An anthemic indie rock of thrashing acoustic guitar, tasty vocal hooks and wonderfully weird word-
smithery.
